The Mary Giblin Scholarship at Caldwell University

Who May Apply

Entering freshman or transfer students who are members, or dependents of members, of the AFL-CIO may apply for a $1,000 scholarship.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Must be a member or a dependent of a member of the AFL-CIO
  • Must be applying for full-time undergraduate study
  • May not be currently enrolled at Caldwell University

When to Apply

All paperwork for this scholarship must be submitted with the Undergraduate Application for Admission and must be received along with all other materials submitted as part of a complete application. Once an admissions decision and scholarship recommendation have been made, adjustments are not possible.

Jack Daly, Les Hynes Scholarship Fund of the New Jersey Steel Association

Who May Apply

Any person, male or female, attending, or planning to attend any institution of higher learning (University, College, Junior College, Technical or Trade School). Please note that preference will be given to applicants who pursue either a degree or certificate in architecture, engineering or other vocation directly related to the construction industry.

Eligibility

An applicant must either be an employee, or the child of any employee of a member firm of the New Jersey Steel Association Inc., or contributor to the Steel Industry Advancement Fund. More particularly:

  1. Children of members of Shopmen’s Local 502 whose parent (or guardian) is employed by a firm operating under a labor agreement with Local 502.
  2. Children of ironworkers referred to work by Iron Workers Local 11 (formerly, Local Unions #11, 45, 373, 480 and 483) as employees of a firm signatory to a labor agreement with Local 11.
  3. Children of operating engineers (Local Union #825) referred to work as employees of a firm signatory to a labor agreement with that Local.
  4. Any ironworker or operating engineer of the above mentioned unions who is employed by a member firm of the New Jersey Steel Association, Inc., or a contributor to the Steel Industry Advancement Fund.
  5. All other employees of member firms of the New Jersey Steel Association, Inc. or firms who contribute to the Steel Industry Advancement Fund as well as their children. However, executives and directors of member firms and their children are excluded.
  6. No paid officers or agents of the above menitoned unions or their children are eligible.
  7. Only one (1) child per family is eligible based on the applicant’s address.
  8. Until amended, total annual scholarship shall not exceed $25,000.

2018 Mercer County AFL-CIO Labor Council Scholarships

The Mercer County AFL-CIO Labor Council offers two separate scholarships: The Frank Thompson Jr. scholarship and the George L. Pelletteri scholarship. The amounts are $500 for the George Pelletieri scholarship and $2,000 for the Frank Thompson scholarship.

For both, applicants must be a high school senior and the child of a current or deceased member of the Union affiliated with the Mercer County AFL-CIO Labor Council.

Required proof of eligibility includes:

  1. Verification of class rank and SAT scores
  2. An essay of no less than 200 words on the subject “What the American Labor Movement has meant to my family.”

2018 IUOE Local 825 Academic and Special Scholarship Applications Now Available

International Union of Operating Engineers Local 825 is pleased to announce the following Academic and Special Scholarship Award for 2018:

  • Six academic scholarship awards of $2,500.00 per academic year for four years
  • Three $2,500.00 special scholarships per academic year for four years, one in each of the following categories:
    • Outstanding Student-Athlete
    • Outstanding Student Service
    • Outstanding Appreciation/Understanding of Unionism and the Labor Movement

5th Annual Local 825 Poker Run

Get ready for the fifth annual MOTORCYCLE POKER RUN.

Once again we will ride for fun and to benefit the Local 825 Scholarship Fund.

Sunday, Sept. 24. Registration is from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Local 825 Training Center, 338 Deans Rhode Hall Road, South Brunswick. The ride begins at 11. The destination is a great BBQ at Moose Lodge, 1240 East Veterans Highway in Jackson, NJ. A band will entertain.

The ride is $25 per rider and covers the food, band and a contribution to the scholarship fund. It’s always been a great time, guaranteed!

Operating Engineers Local 825 Awards $90,000 in Scholarships to Nine Grads

Members of the IUOE Local 825 presented $10,000 scholarships to nine graduating high school seniors Tuesday at the East Brunswick Hilton.

The scholarship money was raised by Local 825 members over a 12-month period through a series of fundraising activities, including a golf outing, a sporting-clays rifle shoot; a dinner dance; and a motorcycle “Poker Run.”

“We hope that these awards will help students reach their potential through higher education,” said Greg Lalevee, Local 825’s Business Manager.  “Given the ever-increasing costs involved, these scholarships mean a lot to the families who receive them.”

Six scholarships were awarded on the basis of academic performance and three were awarded for achievements in athletics, service and understanding of union values.
