Mercer County AFL-CIO Labor Council Scholarships

The Mercer County AFL-CIO Labor Council offers two separate scholarships: The Frank Thompson Jr. scholarship and the George L. Pelletteri scholarship. The amounts are $500 for the George Pelletieri scholarship and $2,000 for the Frank Thompson scholarship.

For both, applicants must be a high school senior and the child of a current or deceased member of the Union affiliated with the Mercer County AFL-CIO Labor Council.

Required proof of eligibility includes:

  1. Verification of class rank and SAT scores
  2. An essay of no less than 200 words on the subject “What the American Labor Movement has meant to my family.”

Monmouth & Ocean County Central Labor Council Memorial Scholarship

Another scholarship has been added to the Local 825 website, this one from our brothers and sisters at the Monmouth & Ocean County Central Labor Council.
Applicants must attend (or plan to attend) a college, university or technical school and be a member or the child of a member of a union affiliated with the Monmouth and Ocean Central Labor Council AFL-CIO. Click here for complete application details.

2017 IUOE Local 825 Academic and Special Scholarship Applications Now Available

International Union of Operating Engineers Local 825 is pleased to announce the following Academic and Special Scholarship Award for 2017:

  • Six academic scholarship awards of $2,500.00 per academic year for four years
  • Three $2,500.00 special scholarships per academic year for four years, one in each of the following categories:
    • Outstanding Student-Athlete
    • Outstanding Student Service
    • Outstanding Appreciation/Understanding of Unionism and the Labor Movement

11/5/2016 Local 825 Dinner Dance to benefit the Scholarship Fund

Saturday, November 5, 2016.
East Brunswick Hilton, 3 Tower Center Boulevard, East Brunswick, NJ
Tickets are $200 per person on a first come, first served basis.
Ads are also available in the commemorative Souvenir Journal.
All proceeds will be dedicated to the education of Local 825 members’ children and grandchildren.
This event has sold out in years past so please respond before October 21.

Local 825 Sporting Clays Scholarship Fundraiser

In short, it was a blast. Members came together for a great time at the Lehigh Valley Sporting Clays site to raise money for the Local 825 scholarship fund. Thanks to John Rocco for pulling it together and Greg Lalevee who was on hand to congratulate the prizewinners. Everyone got 100 chances to hit a clay pigeon and some did better than others. But everyone had fun … here’s some more proof.

Local 825 members and children invited to apply for NJ Steel Association Jack Daly and Les Hynes Scholarship Awards

Our members and children are invited to apply for scholarships available through the New Jersey Steel Association, to help pay for attendance at any institution of higher learning (University, College, Junior College, Technical or Trade School).

Preference will be given to applicants who pursue either a degree or certificate in architecture, engineering or other vocation directly related to the construction industry.

Jack Daly Les Hynes Scholarship Fund – 2016 – Sponsored by The New Jersey Steel Association

Nine children and grandchildren of Local 825 members were awarded $10,000 scholarships at a dinner in their honor June 1 at the East Brunswick Hilton

The nine students were selected out of more than 30 applicants. An independent review team headed by Professor Carla Katz, J.D., of Rutgers University and including William Brucher of Rutgers’ School of Management and Labor Relations, Professor James Cooney, J.D., of the School of Management and Labor Relations and Francis Ryan, of the School of Management and Labor Relations.

The awards were presented by Business Manager Greg Lalevee, President John Wood, Secretary Bob Davis, Jack Nacion, Joe Logan and Jim McGowan.

2016 Scholarship Opportunities

International Union of Operating Engineers Local 825 is pleased to announce that our members have approved an Executive Board recommendation to provide nine scholarship awards of $2,500 per academic year for four years (Freshman through Senior) to nine graduating high school seniors from the class of 2016, who will begin attending a college or university in Fall 2016.

The Third Annual Poker Run, to benefit the Local 825 Scholarship Fund, will be held on Sunday Sept. 27.

This year’s ride will start at the Local 825 Training Center, 338 Deans Rhode Hall Road, South, Brunswick, NJ, and end with food and music at Moose Lodge, 1240 East Veterans Highway, Jackson, NJ.

Registration is $25 per rider and $15 per passenger. Register early and save $5. Late registration will be available that morning, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

All proceeds from the ride will benefit the Scholarship Fund, a 501 C 3 organization, and are tax deductible. Make checks payable to “Local 825 Scholarship Fund” and send to 65 Springfield Ave., Springfield, NJ 07081.
