2023 Middlesex & Somerset Counties AFL-CIO Labor Council’s Raymond A. Peterson Scholarship

This program offers three awards: First place, $2,500. Second place, $1,500. Third place, $1,000.

Students are eligible if they have a parent or guardian who is a member in good standing in a local union which is affiliated with the Middlesex and Somerset Counties AFL-CIO Labor Council, or if the applicant is a union member, the student must be a member in good standing in a local union which is affiliated with the Middlesex and Somerset Counties AFL-CIO Labor Council. Local Union must also be in good standing with the Council. To determine if the Local Union is affiliated and in good standing with the Council, please contact your union’s business office.

In addition, applicants also must:

  1. Provide verification of acceptance at a post-secondary educational institution and verification of a B average or above in the graduating class. An official high school transcript must accompany the application. Scholarship awards will not be awarded without these verifications.
  2. Write an essay of not less than 250 words on the subject of the Labor Movement detailed on the application form. Instructions are found on the application form.

Completed application and essay must be postmarked by Friday, April 14, 2023, and mailed to Middlesex-Somerset Scholarship Committee at 1295 Livingson Ave., North Brunswick, NJ 08902.

2023 Monmouth & Ocean County Central Labor Council Memorial Scholarship

2023 IUOE Local 825 Academic and Special Scholarship Applications Now Available

International Union of Operating Engineers Local 825 is pleased to announce the following Academic and Special Scholarship Award for 2023:

  • Seven academic scholarship awards of $2,500.00 per academic year for four years
  • Three $2,500.00 special scholarships per academic year for four years, one in each of the following categories:
    • Outstanding Student-Athlete
    • Outstanding Student Service
    • Outstanding Appreciation/Understanding of Unionism and the Labor Movement

9th Annual Poker Run

Get ready to ride in the 9th Annual Local 825 Poker Run. Registration is from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 25, at the Dayton Training Center. 2022 Jack Daly, Les Hynes Scholarship Fund of the New Jersey Steel Association

Who May Apply

Any person, male or female, attending, or planning to attend any institution of higher learning (University, College, Junior College, Technical or Trade School). Please note that preference will be given to applicants who pursue either a degree or certificate in architecture, engineering or other vocation directly related to the construction industry.

Eligibility

An applicant must either be an employee, or the child of any employee of a member firm of the New Jersey Steel Association Inc., or contributor to the Steel Industry Advancement Fund. More particularly:

  1. Children of members of Shopmen’s Local 502 whose parent (or guardian) is employed by a firm operating under a labor agreement with Local 502.
  2. Children of ironworkers referred to work by Iron Workers Local 11 (formerly, Local Unions #11, 45, 373, 480 and 483) as employees of a firm signatory to a labor agreement with Local 11.
  3. Children of operating engineers (Local Union #825) referred to work as employees of a firm signatory to a labor agreement with that Local.
  4. Any ironworker or operating engineer of the above mentioned unions who is employed by a member firm of the New Jersey Steel Association, Inc., or a contributor to the Steel Industry Advancement Fund.
  5. All other employees of member firms of the New Jersey Steel Association, Inc. or firms who contribute to the Steel Industry Advancement Fund as well as their children. However, executives and directors of member firms and their children are excluded.
  6. No paid officers or agents of the above mentioned unions or their children are eligible.
  7. Only one (1) child per family is eligible based on the applicant’s address.
  8. Until amended, total annual scholarship shall not exceed $25,000.

IUOE LOCAL 825 announces its 2022 scholarship contest winners

Local 825 honored this year’s ten scholarship winners and their families at the East Brunswick Hilton in June. Business Manager Greg Lalevee and President John Wood were joined by Executive Board members John Rocco, Bob Davis, Joe Logan and Willie Vaccaro in congratulating the winners and their families..

Amanda Celentano of Frankford Township, NJ, is with her mom and dad, Daniel Celentano. She will attend Kutztown University of Pennsylvania.

Andrew Costa of Warren, NJ, with mom and dad Jose Manuel Costa. A recipient of the scholarship for Outstanding Appreciation and Understanding of Unionism and the Labor Movement, he will attend Stevens Institute of Technology.

Liliana Cunha of Easton, with mom and dad, Nelson Cunha. Liliana will attend Brown University and plans to major in neuroscience.

Michael Leanza of Bernardsville, with grandfather Fred G. Kocses and family members. Michael will attend Lehigh University to study integrated business and engineering.

Alana Nicole Linden of Washington Township, with mom and dad Jeffrey Linden. She will attend Florida Atlantic University to major in Architecture.

Greg Lalevee presents the scholarship award to Philip LoPiccolo of Barnegat. The son of Vincent LoPiccolo,Philip will attend the Citadel Military College of South Carolina and major in Business Management.

Nicolas Lunt of Washington Township, the son of James Lunt, receives his award from Greg. Nicolas will attend Rowan University and study Computer Science.

Nicole A. Rozanski of Philadelphia with mom and dad Michael Rozanski. This year’s recipient of the Service Award, Nicole will attend University of Sciences in the Physical Therapy Program.

McKenzie Viersma of Green Township with mom and dad Kevin Viersma and family members.

Anya Bachor of Harpswell, Maine, the granddaughter of William Bachor was unable to attend the dinner but was recognized for her achievement. Anya will attend Lesley University in the fall to major in film studies.
