2012 scholarship opportunities

Local 825 offers its own scholarship program, along with other labor-related opportunities for scholarships and grants. Details are provided below:

Local 825 Members approve recommendation to double scholarships & grants program for 2012

Local 825’s members generously approved an Executive Board recommendation to expand the union’s 2012 scholarship program, by doubling the number of awards given in prior years.

This means that a total of four scholarships will be awarded in 2012, as compared to two previously. Each scholarship is worth $2,500 per academic year for a total of $10,000 over four years.

Local 825 family membersApplicants must be from the class of 2012, who will begin attending a college or university in Fall 2012.

In addition to the scholarships, six one-time grants of $1,500 each will be awarded (last year, three grants were awarded). Grants are awarded in each of the following categories:

arrow Outstanding student athlete
arrow Outstanding student service
arrow Outstanding appreciation/understanding of unionism and the Labor movement

Local 825 eligibility criteria
arrow Applicants must have either a parent or grandparent in good membership standing with Local 825
arrow High school graduate of the class of 2012
arrow Acceptance as a full-time student at a four-year college or university

In keeping with the spirit of unionism,the scholarship and grant application process reflects a pro-labor and community-service emphasis. Scholarship and grant applicants are required to submit the following information and materials (complete details are included in the application package.):
arrow SAT scores.
arrow High school transcripts.
arrow Two letters of recommendation from teachers, employers or civic leaders that describe the applicant's contributions (both past and potential) to his/her school and community.
arrow A short essay (about 500 words) that discusses the applicant's aspirations and how union values have influenced his/her life choices.
arrow Optional -- additional discretionary materials supporting grant applications.

Applicants may request to be considered for more than one grant but each winner may receive only one award. Winners will be based on their academic achievement, community service and commitment to unionism. Local 825 reserves the right not to issue a specific grant, if it is determined that there is not an "outstanding" candidate in any of the three grant categories.

The Essex-West Hudson Labor Council AFL-CIO scholarship program

The Essex-West Hudson Labor Council AFL-CIO scholarship program offers twelve $500 scholarships the 2012 academic year. To receive a scholarship award, the recipient must be:
arrow A high school senior.
arrow Accepted at an accredited college or accredited post-high school education program.
arrow A member of a local union affiliated with the Essex-West Hudson Central Labor Counci,l or
arrow A member's spouse or child.

Each applicant must submit a brief written statement explaining why he or she qualifies for the award. Each application must be accompanied by an official transcript from the applicant's high school.

The Essex-West Hudson Labor Council's scholarship committee will recommend award recipients on the basis of their community service; extra-curricular activities; scholastic ability; and commitment to the Labor Movement.

Bergen County Central Trades & Labor Council AFL-CIO Scholarship Fund

The Bergen County Central Trades & Labor Council offers six $1,000 scholarships for 2012. Members of local unions affiliated with Bergen County Central Trades and Labor Council AFL-CIO and their dependents are eligible to apply.

Three scholarships are offered in memory of Ed Purtill and three for Abe Solomon. Applications must be returned by April 14, 2012.

The Ted Larew Scholarship Fund of the NJ Steel Association Application deadline is June 30, 2012.

Deadlines and details

How you can apply for scholarships and grants in any of the programs

The Local 825 application deadline has passed for this year.

Scholarship and grant winners will be informed of the competition results by the May 4, 2012. The four scholarship winners and the six grant winners will be invited to attend a scholarship dinner in their honor in June.
