Local 825 expands scholarship/grants program, announces 2012 winners

LOCAL 825 EXPANDS ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIPS & GRANTS FOR 2012-13 AND SELECTS WINNERS FROM BIGGER POOL OF APPLICANTS

SPRINGFIELD, NJ – Local 825 of the International Union of Operating Engineers has awarded four $10,000 scholarships and six$1,500 grants to high school seniors from throughout New Jersey and Middletown, N.Y.

“With the annual tuition increases and the continuation of a weak economy, it’s harder than ever to send kids to college,” said Greg Lalevee, business manager of Local 825. “Our scholarship and grants program is intended to reward achievement in school and the community, while fostering an understanding of what unionism is all about.”

The scholarship program is open to the children or grandchildren of Local 825’s members. The $10,000 scholarship is paid over four years at $2,500 per year. The grants are one-time payments of $1,500.

This year’s winners were selected out of a field of 27 qualified applicants, an increase in applicants of 35% over last year.

They were awarded to:

  • Marina Starcic, a graduate of Brick Township High School;
  • Jenna Sterling, a graduate of Absegami High School in Galloway Township;
  • Domenic Colletti, a graduate of Allentown High School, Upper Freehold Township; and
  • Megan Rafferty, a graduate of Pine Bush High School, Orange County, NY.

Six grants were awarded. The recipients were:

  • Michael Mondon, a graduate of Westfield High School;
  • Jacob Andrassy of Pennsbury High School (Pennsylvania);
  • Rebecca Jones, a graduate of Hopewell Valley Central High School;
  • Tyler Holoboski, a graduate of South Plainfield High School;
  • Johnna Tratta, a graduate of St. Joseph High School, Metuchen; and
  • Samantha Wacha, a graduate of Warwick Valley (N.Y.) High School.

The Local 825 scholarship program begins each year in January and ends in with the winners being announced in June.

Local 825 of the International Union of Operating Engineers is headquartered in Springfield, NJ, and represents more than 6,700 members throughout New Jersey and in five counties of lower New York state, including Rockland, Orange, Ulster, Sullivan and Delaware.
